The Memorial of J. D. M, COGHILL, M. D.

Respectfully Sheweth,

That your Excellency's Memorialist is Twenty nine years of age, a Doctor of medi- cine and Master in Surgery, of the University of Aberdeen, a Licentiate of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physic- ians of Edinburgh, of nearly Ten years standing, and duly registered according to the Medical Act of 1st October 1858.

That your Memoralist has served for Three years as Surgeon of the 2d Royal Lanarkshire Militia, and has been highly recommended by his late Commanding Officer, and the Principal Military Medical Officers under whom he served in Camp at Alder- shot, and elsewhere.

That your Memorialist has practised his profession for nearly three years in China, first as Medical Officer of the Imperial Maritime Customs, Hankow, and latterly in Shangai, as one of the visiting Surgeons of the General Floating Hospital.

That your Memorialist is at present an Assistant Colonial Surgeon in the Civil Medical Departinent of Ceylon, in which he has served for two years. During that period be has been placed in sole charge of a large Government Civil Hospital at Matale, in the Central Province, and of the Judicial duties of the District, as well as the Superin- tendence of Vaccination. He has been recently removed to Head Quarters, to take charge of the Hospitals attaching to the large Jails of Hultsdorf, and Welikada, and of the Police and Judicial duties of Colombo. He believes he has performed all these duties, which are of a responsible nature, to the entire satisfaction of the Head of his Depart- ment, to whom he appeals with confidence.

Your Memorialiat, having come to hear that the appointment of Colonial Surgeon of Hongkong is about to become vacant by the retirement of Dr. Murray, begs most res- pectfully to offer himself as a candidate for the vacancy.

He humbly trusts that his past services to the Government, and the experience he has gained in his profession, and in official routine therefrom, will be taken by your Exeel- lency into favorable consideration in support of the application which your Memorialíst now ventures to prefer, and he prays that your Excellency will be kindly pleased to nominate him to the appointment of Colonial Surgeon of Hongkong, when such appoint- ment shall become vacant.
